Top Esports Break Through the Chaos to Reach the Worlds 2026 Quarterfinals
Top Esports (TES) have booked their place in the quarterfinals of the League of Legends World Championship 2026, finishing the Swiss stage with a 3-1 record. They opened the tournament with a loss to Hanwha Life Esports (HLE), a game in which top laner 369 visibly struggled against Zeus. From there, TES won three straight matches — against Anyone's Legend (AL), G2 Esports and Bilibili Gaming (BLG) — to close the Swiss stage at 3-1.
This is the same organisation that reached the semifinals at Worlds last year, and which entered this year's event as the LPL's third seed. Viewed through that lens, a quarterfinal berth is not a miracle; it is a reasonable result relative to seeding. What makes it notable is everything that happened to the team off the Rift this season — and the fact that the result arrived anyway.
The year did not start well. At MSI 2026, TES were eliminated 1-3 by Team Secret Whales, an unusually early exit by their own standards. Doubts about the team's consistency persisted through the domestic LPL season, and qualifying for Worlds as the third seed did not fully answer them.
Then came the disruptions right before Worlds. Two of the team's coaches were unavailable for the tournament, and ZUIAN was also ruled out. Reports reference visa issues, though it is not stated whether every absence shared the same cause, nor who took over coaching duties in their stead. Against that backdrop, 369's return from semi-retirement was the single most important relief available to TES: he came back and filled the gap at top lane.
His record justifies the call. He has been present in the knockout phase of every Worlds since 2026. That statistic needs to be read carefully, though. First, it is a team-level achievement, not proof of one player's individual brilliance. Second, Worlds used a group stage in 2026 and 2026; the Swiss format and the 'playoffs' terminology are later developments. Flattening five years into one comparable streak is misleading.
The real story lies inside the Swiss stage. After the opening loss to HLE, TES looked short on margin — in the Swiss format, another defeat pushes a team toward a difficult draw. What followed was one of the sharpest turnarounds of the season: a win over AL, a win over G2 Esports, and finally a win over BLG. Those are three different stylistic challenges — AL's structured teamplay, G2's unpredictable drafting, BLG's individual firepower. Winning three straight does not mean TES solved one problem; it means they found answers to three.
The stat usually cited around the BLG win is that BLG had won three of the previous four meetings, all by 3-0. A technical caveat is necessary here. A 3-0 scoreline generally implies a best-of-five series — LPL domestic playoffs or finals. Swiss-stage matches are played in shorter formats. Using an old Bo5 record to inflate the significance of a current Swiss result does not hold: the format, the patch and possibly the rosters were different. What can be said is that TES beat their toughest domestic rival at a moment when they could not afford to lose. Anything beyond that needs caution.
Now the part that is most conspicuously missing from this story: any explanation of the play itself. What exactly did TES fix between the HLE loss and the three wins? What changed in draft? How did their read on the meta shift? Objective control, vision game, lane swaps, teamfight setup — none of this is publicly documented. What is available is psychological explanation: 369's mindset, the mentality of Tian and JackeyLove, the team staying stable under pressure. These matter, but they do not explain a competitive result. Teams do not win three matches because a mindset changed; they win through drafts, focus and execution.
On Tian and JackeyLove, it has been said that they looked like a 'completely different side'. That claim arrives without a single metric — no KDA, no damage share, no gold differential, no comparison to an earlier baseline. Such a claim should either be backed by data or attributed directly to a player or coach. Until then, it is a good-sounding line, not analysis.
The same applies to 369. Three good matches do not prove he 'has not lost his world-class qualities'. They prove he played well in three matches. The distinction is small, but in journalism it is the whole point. Likewise, the assertion that the visa and coaching problems did not cost the team stability runs into the facts: they lost the opening match, and 369 struggled against Zeus. It did cost them. They recovered. That is the more accurate and more honest description.
One more thing needs to be recorded. Calling this 'one of the most unbelievable journeys in Worlds history' does not square with the team's own record. For a team that reached the semifinals last year and entered as the LPL's third seed, reaching the quarterfinals is commendable — but 'most unbelievable' requires a comparison set. Unbelievable relative to whom? Relative to which seeding projection? Without that basis, the superlative is decoration.
As for what comes next, the quarterfinal will certainly be harder. The Swiss stage preserves some margin for error; the knockout bracket does not. But 'it will be harder' is a truism, not a forecast, and it can only be assessed once the opponent and the bracket path are known. For now, the real question for TES is whether the weaknesses exposed against HLE — pressure on top lane, control of the early game — have actually been addressed. Three Swiss wins do not answer that; they only show the team is capable of finding answers.
Finally, several basic pieces of information are missing from the available record and the picture is incomplete without them: the scoreline and format of the TES–BLG match; what the loss meant for BLG — elimination, or a drop into a decider; when and in which competitions BLG's three 3-0 wins took place; the precise cause of the coaches' and ZUIAN's absences and who covered their roles; and hard performance data for 369. Without these, the story reads well but remains an incomplete record.
What is certain is this: Top Esports finished the Swiss stage 3-1 and reached the quarterfinals despite a disrupted build-up, two absent coaches, a hole at top lane and a loss in their opening match. That is a solid, creditable achievement. It does not need to be called 'unbelievable' — the true story is sufficient on its own.
